Japandi sits between two ideas: the Japanese principle of leaving room around an object, and the Scandinavian instinct for warmth without clutter. The result is a desk setup with fewer, better things — and enough empty space around them to actually notice each one.

The mood

Slow and grounded. Furniture tends to sit lower than in a typical office, which changes how the whole room feels — less "workstation," more considered corner of a home.

The materials that make it work

Unlacquered wood, stone, paper, and linen. Avoid anything glossy or heavily patterned — the texture should come from the material itself, not a printed design. A single ceramic or stone object on the desk does more here than a shelf of decor.

Lighting

Diffused, soft light — paper-shade or fabric-shade lamps work better here than anything with an exposed bulb. If natural light is available, let it fall unobstructed rather than filtering it through heavy curtains.
