The materials that make it work

Dark stained or aged wood, leather in place of fabric upholstery, brass or bronze hardware instead of chrome or matte black. Books, displayed rather than hidden, do more visual work here than almost any other object.

Lighting

Warm, low, and directional — a brass banker's lamp with a green or amber shade is close to the archetype. Avoid bright overhead light; this look wants pools of warm light, not even coverage.
